Fiber-To-The-Premise- Intern experience

I started my Verizon career as an intern in Strategic Sourcing on a project called “Fiber-To-The-Premise." This project is what we all know now as our award winning FiOS broadband and entertainment service today. As a college kid at the time, I was working on a multi-billion dollar national deployment, something really really big!

Now, I’m currently a 2nd level manager in Strategic Sourcing. My role gives me the extraordinary opportunity to work closely with cross functional teams across a diverse set of departments to select top quality products, while delivering savings that positively impact the company's bottom line. The savings are reinvested into the network so that Verizon can offer the most reliable network that we all stand behind.

I've been fortunate to work on some really cool and strategic business deals that are essential to deploying new products and services. To play an important part in delivering something this compelling is rewarding in itself. I’ll never forget watching a TV ad for FiOS for the first time and saying to myself, “I started working on that last year and actually negotiated that contract to help build FiOS!”
Verizon has given me the tools to better myself and succeed in my career. Having colleagues as great as mine makes every day much more rewarding, and I look forward to continuing my career here. Every day presents itself with great new challenges. It takes great people and teamwork to succeed in our competitive economy successfully. We are working extremely hard to deliver new services that we hope you can be excited about, and I hope that you will be more excited with all that we deliver.

Verizon Employee Experience

Hi, my name is Tom Boudrow, and I work in the Verizon Center for Customers with Disabilities (VCCD). I myself am Deaf, so working with the disabled community holds a place close to my heart. Prior to coming to the VCCD, I worked as the executive director of the state association for the Deaf in Massachusetts. I had a long term contract with Verizon operating a specialized equipment program, and when I later came to the VCCD I was one of the people responsible for overseeing the program I once worked under as a contractor with the state association.

Since coming to the VCCD, I have had the opportunity to educate/advocate for many accessibility improvements for our customers. One that stands out is the creation of the videophone gate, which permits Deaf customers to call using a videophone where they actually see who they are speaking to, and use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. This allows ASL users to communicate in their first language with which they are most comfortable. It also created job opportunities for people who are Deaf at Verizon.

Verizon was recognized on a national level by deaf service agencies, and received awards for this ground breaking endeavor which was the first of its kind. I was recognized and received the “2009 employee of the year” award by “Careers and the Disabled” magazine. Verizon continues to give me the opportunity to reach out and improve access as well as create partnerships with different disability communities. I am currently working with the Talking Information Center (TIC), a radio station for individuals who are blind. TIC reaches out to 20k people in Massachusetts alone, and many more in other states. As a result of this collaboration, TIC has recently started running public service announcements about the services the VCCD brings to people with disabilities. They agreed to do this because they believe in the importance of getting information about the VCCD services out to their listeners in order to make the experience of calling Verizon an easy and comfortable one.
With technology rapidly changing we need to stay alert and be sure people with disabilities are able to have the same access as everyone else. I have conducted many disability sensitivity classes and always explain what I believe to be the definition of disability. I state that a disability is when the person and the environment don’t match, so our job is to make it match. As the best team in telecommunications we CAN make it happen.

Anyone wishing to learn more about people with disabilities should reach out to the Verizon ERG called Disability Issue Awareness Leaders (DIAL). Also, you would like more information on the services the VCCD offers please email us at VCCD@Verizon.com.

Our intern's communication

Elevator Speech

Hello everyone.

My name is Jose Chavira. I am an intern in the FTTP (fiber to the premises) Operation Center in Redlands, CA. I received my B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside and recently completed my first year in the MBA program at University of California, Riverside. I feel that my social science background and business knowledge allow me to approach a situation from different angles, using quantitative and qualitative methods, as not everything is black and white.
One of my main projects has been closing 8P work orders, which are work orders requested by individual customers and/or businesses. Though a work order may be physically complete in the field by construction, it may not be complete in our records. I would close work orders by requesting documentation from various engineering departments and send them to reimbursable engineers. These work orders vary in amounts- some may be worth $500; the current work order I am trying to close is worth over $95,000. Accompanied with this task is populating dates in various systems.
Another project involved researching fiber cable that cannot be accounted for. This cable is classified as VT02. The total worth of cable I researched was worth $200,000. I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity and to my fellow interns, I hope you all are enjoying your internship as much as I am.

Thank you.

Employee giveaways -Free Droids!!

Whoa! Did you see that?! That was the 50th Motorola Droid X smartphone given away today and the phone has not even been released yet! It’s days like these that I look forward to coming to work even more. Typically when there is a high profile smartphone to be launched by Verizon, the manufacturer has a street team in the Basking Ridge office with contests to win the phone. So far there have been giveaways for the Blackberry Storm, Motorola Droid, and the Droid X. What better way to generate excitement over a new device than giving employees a chance to win one? The lines form early as it seems everyone on campus is exuding eagerness for an opportunity to win. Best of all, we have a chance to show off the devices before the general public can get them. I love being a tech geek at Verizon!
